Absolutely. Putin must clearly see that he cannot win further advances of any significance without tremendous additional costs and that a "win" can be declared for Russia with captured regions of eastern Ukraine, insuring a land bridge to Crimea and a buffer with Ukraine. Zelensky needs to be convinced that America will no longer supply weapons and ammunition nor spearhead the indefinite goodwill of Western allies to recapture lost territories and certainly not Crimea. At the additional cost of several hundred thousand Ukrainian and Russian young men's lives and the certainty of long-term destabilization and nuclear threat, Crimea cannot be an option to return to Ukraine. Zelensky's place in history is then secured as the singular leader that saved Ukraine decisively against Russian domination. One more point: the Biden administration must be persuaded that an extended war in Ukraine will only strengthen further disillusionment from the left for the Democratic party and threaten its re-election opportunities in 2024.
